Senior Protection Engineer / Europe

Location: Europe (Flexible – travel required) 

 

Role & Responsibilities

We are looking for a Senior Protection Engineer to be responsible for the commissioning, testing, and optimisation of protection and control systems within electrical power networks.

The ideal candidate will be based in Europe, with flexibility to travel across various project sites as needed.

  • Perform commissioning activities for protection systems in substations, power plants, and transmission networks, ensuring compliance with client specifications and industry standards.
  • Conduct detailed testing of protection relays (e.g., distance, overcurrent, differential) and configure settings according to system design specifications.
  • Perform fault analysis, review protection settings, and troubleshoot system issues to ensure proper protection coordination and reliability.
  • Ensure seamless integration of protection systems with SCADA, control systems, and communication networks for efficient monitoring and operation.
  • Conduct functional tests and verify protection schemes, including testing of hardware (e.g., relays, circuit breakers) and software settings.
  • Prepare commissioning reports, technical documentation, and test records to ensure compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as a key point of contact with clients during the commissioning phase, providing technical support and ensuring that protection systems meet operational expectations.
  • Provide troubleshooting expertise during the commissioning phase and offer ongoing support to clients post-commissioning for system optimisation and fault resolution.
  • Ensure all activities adhere to safety regulations, company procedures, and industry standards, maintaining a strong focus on quality and compliance throughout the commissioning process.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in commissioning, testing, and configuration of protection systems for electrical power networks, including substations, transmission lines, and transformers.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
  • Experience and strong understanding of protection relays (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Micom, SEL, GE), protection schemes, and electrical network protection standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, ANSI).
  • Familiarity with protection and control system software tools and relay configuration software (e.g., Siemens, ABB Relion).
  • Experience with commissioning and testing of protection relays, including functional testing, setting verification, and fault analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues related to protection system performance and integration.
  • Computer literate – Good knowledge of MS office, Databases, Operating systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (additional languages are a plus).
  • Willingness to travel to various sites across Europe as needed, including potential on-site stays for extended periods.
