Senior HVDC Commissioning Engineer / Europe

Location: Europe (Flexible – travel required) 

Role & Responsibilities

Aspecto is seeking a skilled Senior High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Commissioning Engineer to lead commissioning activities for HVDC systems, ensuring smooth integration with the broader power grid. As a part of our HVDC Commissioning team, you will have the opportunity to specialize in one of the following roles:

  • Control Engineer (Open Loop or Closed Loop control)
  • Protection Engineer (DC or AC)
  • SCADA, Gateways, and Communications Systems Specialist
  • Primary/General Systems and Main Circuit Systems Specialist
  • Auxiliary Systems Engineer (batteries, AC/DC, valves, cooling, firefighting)
  • Site Management Lead

This role is based in Europe and requires flexibility to travel to various project sites across the region, involving both Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute all aspects of testing, including pre-commissioning, functional, and acceptance tests for HVDC systems and equipment in one of the specialized areas above. Ensure test accuracy and strict adherence to project specifications.
  • Act as the primary on-site contact for clients, addressing technical issues during commissioning, providing hands-on troubleshooting support, and ensuring optimal system operation.
  • Prepare, review, and manage all commissioning documentation, such as test reports, commissioning records, as-built documents, and client reports, maintaining compliance with industry standards and project requirements.
  • Uphold rigorous standards for health, safety, and environmental compliance at all project sites, promoting a safety-first culture within the commissioning team.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience: 5-8+ years in commissioning HVDC systems or related high-voltage AC systems (e.g., AC substations, power electronics, control systems); experience with large-scale HVDC projects is highly preferred. Strong expertise in HVAC systems may also be considered.
  • Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of HVDC technology, including converter stations, HVDC transformers, primary equipment, control systems, protection schemes, and grid integration.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
  • Commissioning Expertise: Proven experience in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting HVDC or HVAC equipment and systems, with a demonstrated ability to manage complex on-site activities.
  • Problem Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve technical issues efficiently and creatively.
  • Safety Focus: Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations, with experience in safety management and compliance on-site.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills in English (additional languages are a plus).
  • Flexibility: Willingness to travel throughout Europe, including extended on-site stays as required.
