VSC technology is the base for Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and Static Syncronous Compensators (STATCOMs). FACTS and STATCOMs have seen a steady increase of use mostly driven by the higher shares of renewable energy and their impact on AC transmission and distribution networks. FACTS and STATCOM systems are used to address many of these issues.
